Abstract

The epidemiological analysis of contemporary genital herpesvirus, chlamydial and trichomonadal infections showed that morbidity in a number of regions and in Ukraine as a whole remains high. There is a general tendency toward a decrease in chlamydiosis and trichomoniasis, but the rates of decrease are insignificant. Genital herpes continues to increase among all social groups and in all regions. In a number of regions and among certain age groups, particularly young people aged 15–19, especially girls, morbidity has increased in recent years against the background of the general downward trend. Statistics do not fully reflect their prevalence in Ukraine and its regions. Hypo- or hyperdiagnosis occurs in some areas. There are gender differences. In most cases, chlamydiosis and trichomoniasis occur more frequently in women, especially young women. For herpes, the data are ambiguous: in some regions herpes is registered more frequently in men. In recent years, a relative increase in morbidity has also been observed among older persons aged 40–59 and even 60 years and older, indicating the need to study this age group separately with regard to the epidemiology of sexually transmitted infections. The findings support an approach to STI epidemiology based on small social groups—persons of specific ages and sexes living in specific territories.
