Abstract

In 45 patients with psoriasis and the “thimble phenomenon,” other manifestations of nail plate damage and their association with disturbances of trace-element metabolism were studied. The most frequent findings were brittleness, fragility, deformities, thinning, delayed growth, splitting, and white spots; several symptoms occurred simultaneously in some patients. Atomic emission and atomic absorption spectrometry of hair demonstrated associations between particular nail changes and deficiency or excess of manganese, iron, zinc, selenium, and other trace elements. The authors emphasize the need for an individualized approach to prescribing trace elements as part of comprehensive psoriasis treatment.
