The Role of Odontogenic Foci of Infection in the Development of Somatic Diseases
Abstract
The study examined the influence of chronic odontogenic foci of infection on the occurrence of alopecia areata in children. Forty-two patients aged 4–16 years with alopecia areata underwent dental assessment; odontogenic foci were identified by targeted dental radiography or orthopantomography. Caries-affected teeth were found in all patients, while chronic infectious foci near one or more teeth were detected in 36 children. Six to twelve months after dental treatment, hair regrowth in areas of alopecia was observed in 34 patients. The authors emphasize that dental status should be considered in the diagnosis and treatment of alopecia areata and recommend cooperation between dentists and dermatologists.Downloads
