Ways to Improve the Diagnosis of Syphilis in Ukraine
Abstract
The article examines ways to improve laboratory diagnosis of syphilis in Ukraine in view of changing disease patterns, including the growing proportion of latent and late forms, and the comparative performance of serological methods. A serology laboratory evaluated TPHA, FTA, ELISA, microreaction, and complement-fixation testing; the highest sensitivity values were reported for TPHA and FTA, while TPHA and ELISA were emphasized among treponemal tests. Examination of sera from 73 patients supported the practical use of TPHA but also demonstrated the need for professional interpretation of results. The authors advocate broader use of modern tests, laboratory accreditation, external quality control, and strengthening of the national serodiagnostic service.Downloads
